Guiding Kids Toward Calmer, More Confident Behavior

Does your child have frequent meltdowns, trouble calming down after frustration, or difficulty following rules? Do big emotions seem to take over their day — and yours?

At JCACounseling, we provide behavior regulation support for children using play therapy — a safe, engaging approach that helps kids understand their feelings, manage impulses, and make positive choices.

LEARN ABOUT PLAY THERAPY

How Play Therapy Supports Behavior Regulation

Play therapy helps children process emotions and practice new skills in a way that feels natural and safe. In our sessions, children:

- Learn to name and understand their emotions

- Develop calming strategies that work for them
- Practice problem-solving and self-control through play
- Strengthen the connection between feelings and actions
- Build confidence in handling challenging situations

We may use art, storytelling, role-play, sensory play, and games — all tailored to your child’s developmental stage and personality.

What to Expect in Behavior Regulation Counseling

We begin with an intake session to understand your child’s history, strengths, and areas of concern. How the intake works will depend on your child’s age:

Children 10 and under: The intake session is for parents only. For all other sessions, a parent must remain in the lobby during the appointment — children cannot be dropped off and left. Children 11–12: May attend the intake session at the parent’s discretion. Adolescents 13–17: The intake session will be held with the adolescent and their parent(s) together.

Following the intake, your child will begin ongoing play therapy sessions tailored to their needs. We’ll also provide regular opportunities for parent updates and collaboration, ensuring you stay informed and supported throughout the process.

Over time, families often see: - Fewer meltdowns and faster recovery after upset - Better ability to follow directions and transition smoothly - Improved emotional awareness and coping skills - Stronger parent-child connection - Increased confidence in handling challenges

Our goal is to create a safe, structured space where your child can grow in their ability to manage big emotions, make thoughtful choices, and feel more in control — while keeping parents involved every step of the way.

Partnering with Parents for Success

Parents are key to lasting change.

We work alongside caregivers to:

- Understand the root causes of challenging behaviors - Teach co-regulation strategies for calming together - Create consistent routines and expectations at home - Provide tools to respond to behaviors effectively - Support communication between home, school, and therapy - When parents and therapists work as a team, kids make faster, more meaningful progress.

What Behavior Regulation Challenges Look Like

Every child experiences tough moments, but sometimes big feelings or impulses can feel overwhelming.

We help kids who:
- Have frequent tantrums or emotional outbursts
- Struggle to calm themselves after getting upset
- Show impulsive or aggressive behavior
- Resist rules or directions
- Have difficulty transitioning between activities
- Feel easily frustrated or “out of control”
These behaviors are often signs that a child’s brain and body need help learning self-regulation skills — not that they’re “bad” or “defiant.”
