Is Virtual Learning Causing Strain In Your Parent/Child Relationship?

Virtual learning causing strain in your parent/child relationship?

By Brooke Sanders, Clinical Intern with JCAC

Here’s a fun activity for connection and gaining a different perspective.

Virtual learning has the potential to create new roles for parents to play in their children’s education. For many, this new dynamic within the home can make it seem like parents and children are speaking different languages. If you’ve ever given directions to your child, which were completely misunderstood, you know what I mean. As parents, we feel that our directions are crystal clear. However, I encourage you to take a step back and experiment with a new perspective.

1. Print out a simple drawing or pull it up on your phone/computer (like the one presented here) and do not let your child see.

2. Invite your child to play a game with you and provide them with paper and something to write with.

3. Describe the drawing to your child, step by step, without telling them what the result will be.

4. When you are done describing the drawing, and your child has finished their masterpiece, compare the two pictures!

Note: Make sure to praise your child’s efforts and emphasize that they are different because everyone interprets things differently.

Take Away:

Our directions, even when they seem crystal clear to us, can be misunderstood by those around us. You are allowed to be frustrated, but I encourage you to also take a step back and examine the possible interpretations of your words. Adjusting directions accordingly may result in better communication between parent and child. You can also model patience and understanding for others by showing your child that you are interested in gaining their perspective!

Have a great day, Brooke
