As parents, it can be difficult to know when a behavior is simply a developmental phase and when your child may need additional support.
You may notice more tantrums, frequent meltdowns, increased anxiety, difficulty separating from you, withdrawal from family or friends, trouble at school, or sudden changes in mood. Many parents wonder:
"Are they just acting out?"
"Will they grow out of this?"
"Should I be worried?"
The truth is that children do not always have the words to say, “I’m overwhelmed,” “I’m anxious,” or “I’m struggling.” Instead, they communicate through their behavior.
Behavior Is Communication
A child who is aggressive may be feeling scared. A child who is shutting down may be experiencing anxiety or emotional overwhelm. A child who is having frequent meltdowns may be struggling with emotions they do not yet know how to understand or express.
Rather than only asking, “How do we stop this behavior?” play therapy asks a deeper question:
“What is this child trying to communicate?”
When we understand the emotional needs underneath the behavior, we create opportunities for meaningful and lasting change.
What Is Play Therapy?
Play therapy is a developmentally appropriate form of psychotherapy designed specifically for children. Because children naturally communicate through play, toys, art, storytelling, and imaginative expression become the language through which they explore their inner world.
Play therapy is much more than playing games or keeping children entertained. A trained play therapist carefully observes themes, emotions, relationships, and patterns that emerge during sessions to help children process difficult experiences, understand their emotions, and develop healthier ways of coping.
What Can Play Therapy Help With?
Play therapy can support children experiencing:
- Anxiety and excessive worries
- Difficulty separating from caregivers
- Behavioral challenges or frequent emotional outbursts
- Difficulty adjusting to life transitions
- Family changes such as divorce or a new sibling
- Grief and loss
- Trauma or difficult experiences
- Low self-esteem or social difficulties
- Challenges expressing emotions
Play Therapy Focuses on the Root of the Problem—Not Just the Behavior
Many approaches focus on stopping a behavior as quickly as possible. While behavior change is often an important goal, lasting change happens when we understand and address what is happening beneath the surface.
For example, a child who refuses to go to school may not simply be “being difficult.” They may be experiencing separation anxiety, social fears, perfectionism, or worries they cannot yet verbalize.
Through a safe and trusting therapeutic relationship, children can explore these underlying emotions, develop emotional awareness, strengthen their ability to regulate feelings, build confidence, and develop healthier ways of relating to themselves and others.
The Long-Term Benefits of Play Therapy
The goal of play therapy is not simply to help a child behave differently for a few weeks. The goal is to help children develop skills and emotional understanding that they can carry with them throughout their lives.
Over time, children may experience:
- Increased confidence and self-esteem
- Improved emotional regulation
- Better communication skills
- Healthier relationships with peers and family members
- Increased resilience when facing challenges
- A stronger understanding of their emotions and needs
When Should You Consider Play Therapy?
You do not have to wait until your child is in crisis to seek support.
If your child’s emotions, behaviors, relationships, or daily functioning have changed significantly or seem difficult for them to manage, therapy can provide a safe space where they feel understood and supported.
Early intervention can make a meaningful difference by giving children the tools to understand themselves, navigate challenges, and build emotional resilience.
