Parental Support

support, education, & counseling

Our Counselors at Johns Creek and Alpharetta Counseling provide parental support sessions, psychoeducational sessions, counseling for parents, and collaborative divorce parenting sessions. We value the role parents have in their children’s lives and maintain a close working relationship during the therapy process. Our therapists provide ongoing support for parents by offering an understanding their child's behavior in addition to addressing the parent's personal needs for self care. We provide education for parents which focus on giving tools for discipline, effective boundary setting, and assist to increase the parent's understanding of a child’s emotional needs. We offer two effective therapy models of working with parents and children in the session together, and we can see parents to teach parenting skills. We also offer collaborative parenting for divorced couples, see below for more information about these models.

This video is an example of how parents and children communicate their feelings differently than adults. With the therapy models below, we can help you connect with your child!

Filial Therapy

parents involvement in play therapy

Filial Therapy is the combination of play therapy and parental support. It offers coaching for the parents concerning discipline and connection with their child. It also brings the parent into the play therapy session allowing both to experience each other in a new way- a respectful, loving, and responsive way. It is one thing to talk about change, it is another to experience the change together. Filial Therapy is a developmental way of attuning to a child’s emotional needs and utilizing ‘play’ as a mean of encouraging their child’s continuing growth and development. It can be used with nearly all child’s problems, and research as shown that play therapy is more effective when the parents are involved. As you can see in the video below, children do not communicate like adults. Using Filial Therapy we can help you understand your child, and help you as the parent be heard by your child.

respect and nurture

Theraplay is a style of filial therapy. It uses more directive techniques to enhance attachment, self-esteem, trust in others, and joyful engagement. It is based on the natural patterns of healthy interaction between parent and child, and is personal, physical and fun. Theraplay interactions focus on four essential qualities found in parent-child relationships: Structure, Engagement, Nurture, and Challenge. Theraplay sessions create an active and emotional connection between the child and parents, resulting in a view of the child as worthy and loveable and of relationships as positive and rewarding.
